Calling them to account (pdf, 35kb)
How can we demand higher standards from our failing news media?
A public lecture with this title was held by Peter Manning on 3 October 2006 as part of the UTS Speaks public lecture series at the University of Technology, Sydney.
Us and Them: A journalist's investigation of Media, Muslims and the Middle East
Us and Them: A journalist's investigation of Media, Muslims and the Middle East is, at one level, the description of a trip through Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine and Israel. But it is much more than that. Peter Manning investigates why the Australian media and political leaders demonise Arabs and Muslims. It is part-politics, part-history, and part-culture, all woven together through good journalism and fine prose. The book follows Peter Manning's early Australian Centre for Independent Journalism study Dog Whistle which examined the representations of Arabic and Muslim people in two major Sydney newspapers, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Daily Telegraph, over a two-year period including the twelve months before and after September 11, 2001.
